At Unkel & Shibilski Dental, we have created a warm and supportive environment for children of all ages. We understand the importance of positive, stress-free experiences, so children become confident about dental visits and excited about taking care of their teeth.
Every member of our amazing dental team is dedicated to providing lots of smiles and a warm and welcoming dental home for your child.
Your Child's First Dental Visit with Us
Our dentists agree with The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's recommendation that children see a dentist six months after the first baby tooth appears but no later than age one.
The goal at this age is to help children adjust to the unique environment of the dental office and get comfortable with our team at an unhurried, comfortable pace. Stress-free visits early on set gives them a positive association with visiting the dentist. When it's time for routine exams and cleanings, they will feel at ease in their surroundings and feel safe and secure with people they know and trust.
If your child is a little older, the first visit allows us to get to know them and determine their oral health needs while helping them feel at ease with our dental team and the new environment.
Avoid Cavities and Gum Disease with Prevention
After your child's initial visit, we will schedule teeth cleanings and exams for them every six months. These services are crucial to help children avoid cavities and gum disease, even if they only have their baby teeth. If we find a cavity at one of these appointments, our dentists can treat it promptly and spare your child the discomfort of a toothache and the need for more complex treatment.
During preventive dentistry appointments, our dental team will:
- Clean their teeth to remove plaque and tartar (also called calculus) that could lead to cavities and gum disease.
- Floss and polish their teeth for a bright, healthy smile.
- Examine their teeth to check for signs of decay, gingivitis, or other dental conditions.
- Take safe digital x-rays as needed to evaluate their dental condition.
As a parent, you may have questions about your brushing and flossing at home, nutrition, and habits like bottle feeding, finger or thumb sucking, or pacifier use. Our highly-trained dental team is very knowledgeable and is happy to provide guidance and support to help your child maintain a healthy smile for a lifetime.
In addition to teeth cleanings and exams, prevention for children includes:
- Dental sealants
- Fluoride applications
- Customized sports mouthguards
Emergency Dentistry for Children
As parents, Dr. Unkel and Dr. Shibilski understand how difficult it is to see your child injured or in pain. If your child has a dental emergency like a toothache or broken tooth, contacting us right away will give you peace of mind.
When you call, a caring team member can provide support and reassurance and get you on our schedule the same day if necessary.
